2007 fully restored, 2009 new boiler, not fitted until 2012, 04/2015 sold to Kirklees Lt.Rly.

Freelance design by E.W.Twining and J.N.Maskelyne in the style of an L.M.S.R. Black 5. New to builder's own Dudley Zoo line, with running # 5751 and name PRINCE CHARLES. 1960 on loan to Fairbourne Railway. 1961-68 laid up at builder's works. 1968 rebuilt with new boiler, 07/05/1969 sold by auction to W.H.McAlpine, c1975 to Blenheim Palace Min. Rly. renamed SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL. 1982 to Steamtown, Carnforth, 1984 renamed PRINCE WILLIAM, 09/01/2003 sold to Evesham Vale Light Rly. When line sold, transferred to owner's private site.

Little is known about this machine. It has been on display (spotted 2012)  in the Science Museum, South Kensington, London

Built to drawings by Mark Smithers, 04/09/1999 steam trials, 2002 offered for sale by David Humphreys, 11/2002 to private buyer and removed to Cleethorpes Coast Lt.Rly.

Construction started by F.M.B.Engineering, Privett, Hants. Rolling chassis sold to Paul Stileman who completed at his own works in Hants.

Ran on his own garden railway, the Thursley Railway, until sold 06/1996 to the Eaton Hall Railway, Cheshire. 

 

Built to 12 1/4 inch gauge. Construction started 1998. Running # 24, name SANDY RIVER. o6/1991 sold to Bure Valley Rly. Norfolk, regauged to 15 inch, name removed, 10/1993 on loan to Kirklees Light Rly, given running # 2. returned to Bure Valley Rly.   27/06/1997 sold to Cleethorpes Coast Light Rly. # reverted to 24, entered service 04/07/1999.

'Jack' was built in 2016 for the Delamont Miniature Railway near Killyleagh in Northern Ireland. An unusual tender locomotive, it's still with the railway today

'George' was built for the Poole Park Miniature Railway, and worked there very sucessfully, bringing steam (and passengers) back to this once busy railway. Then the local authority convinced itself 10.25" gauge was dangerous, closed it down, vowing on expert advice to reopen at 12.25", but it ended up being rebuilt at 10.25", although by that time toperator Chris Bullen and 'George' had long since departed to a new line at Honeybrook Farm near Wimborne. That venture subsequently failed and 'George' has disappeared - for now at least.

Delivered new to South Downs Light Railway

Phalaenopsis sounds as though it might a roman god of steely grit and power, but it's actually a genus of orchids containing about 70 species. All very fitting, because the locomotive has lived it's life at the Mortacombe Railway, Chilton Garden Centre near Didcot

Built for failed Tintern Abbey Railway project. Delivered to Scarborough Fair Collection and put on static display. Bought by Statfold Barn Railway near Tamworth for the new Mease Valley Railway in 2023

New as 12 1/4 inch gauge to a private line in Cornwall, little used. In 2011 returned to builders, regauged to 15 inch, 2017 to Lappa Valley Rly.

A company building locomotives on Exmoor simply had to have one (or in this case two) called 'Lorna Doone'. Confusingly this was the second 12.25"  'Lorna Doone' built for the railway's own use, the first (works number 191) having been rebuilt and sold as a 10.25" locomotive in 2001. Still thought to be at Exmoor.

'Mariloo' was the first of three 12.25" gauge 2-6-2s, 'Mariloo' going to Exbury Gardens, 325 'Black Beauty' to Ree Park Safari in Denmark and 350 'Carol Ann' to the Mease Valley Railway at Statfold Barn in 2024. They are amongst the largest and most powerful 12.25" locomotives ever built

'Black Beauty' is a twin with 'Mariloo', built for Exbury Gardens. They were considered to be amongst the largest and most powerful 12.25" locomotives in the world when they were built in 2009. 'Black Beauty' was tested at Exbury, before being delivered to its new home at Ree Park Safari near Aarhus in Denmark

'King Arthur' has spent its whole life on the 10.25" Rudyard Lake Railway, but was designed for easy conversion to 12.25" should the need ever arrise. It's one of the most powerful 10.25" steam engines, and probably the largest (ie tallest and widest) locomotive to run at this gauge.

Built to order of John Hayton for his Longleat Light Railway, Wiltshire, and named JOHN HAYTON. In 2015 it was sold to the Perrygrove Railway, removed 20/02/2015, and renamed ANNE. In 10/2015 it was away for heavy overhaul near Witney, Oxon.

'Pulborough' has had a very stable existence, at the South Downs Light Railway from new. Named after the local town in West Sussex

Ordered by Difflin Lake Rly. Co. Donegal, Ireland. Still there 2023.

'Naomi' was the third Exmoor locomotive at Exbury, bigger and more powerful than No.315 'Rosemary'.

New to private owner on Evesham Vale Light Rly.

Ordered by Quentin Jones for service at Windmill Farm Railway, Burscough, Lancashire. 23/04/2010 sold to dealers Station Road Steam. Later in 2010 resold to Bressingham Steam Preservation Trust for their Waveney Valley Railway.

Quite a complicated history. 'Lorna Doone' was Exmoor's third locomotive, built as a 0-6-0T to 12.25" gauge for the Exmoor Steam Railway. In 2001 it was rebuilt as  a 10.25" 0-6-2T - see separate entry for 310. It was renamed 'John Remy' and subsequently worked at Beale Park. In 2018, it was bought by the Littlehampton Miniature Railway which was desperate for motive power. It emerged in 2021 as 'Christopher',  a 12.25" gauge 2-6-2T, and now works in that form at Littlehampton

New to Pixieland Miniature Railway, Kilkhampton, Cornwall, named DENNIS. By 09/10/2007 the Brooklands Adventure Park and railway had closed, so returned to builders.  On 29/06/2015 sold to Lappa Valley Rly, renamed RUBY, given running # 3.

Delivered new to a private owner at the Wotton Light Railway in 1996. In 2015 she went to A. Keef Ltd. for overhaul.

'Denzil' has spent most of its life at the Exmoor Steam Railway. A tank locomotive, it now has a tender too

Built for the 12.25" gauge Ashorne Light Railway and named 'Ashorne'. Later sold to Rudyard Lake Railway, regauged to 10.25" and named 'Pendragon'. 'Ashorne' was one of a pair with 298 'Bella', which was built as a bare chassis by Exmoor and completed by the Ashorne Light Railway as petrol-hydraulic 'Bella', which was also subsequently regauged to 10.25", working at the Wilderness Railway, and now the Barnwell Hill Railway as 'Agnes'.

Delivered new to the Rudyard Lake Railway

03/10/1992 ordered by Michael Crofts for his Perrygrove Railway. First steamed 16/07 /1993.  2002-04/2003 at builder's for 10 year overhaul. 2014 chassis to Jim Shackell, near Witney for overhaul, given new wheels and pistons. 13/07 2015 returned to service.

'Yeo Valley' was the Exmoor Steam Railway's second locomotive, and much bigger than the first loco 'Bray Valley'. It had a 2-8-0T wheel arrangement, but doesn't seem to have been a big success, and is the only Exmoor locomotive to date to have been dismantled and recycled

Bray Valley has had a long and complicated life. It was originally built as a 7.25" gauge locomitive for the Stirling family's proposed tourist railway on Exmoor, but after a last minute change to the much bigger 12.25" gauge, it was hastily widenedn and regauged 10 12.25". Beneath the skin, of course, it was still fundamentally a little engine, and not really powerful enough, so it was regauged back to 10.25" and sold to a private owner in Wales

Built to designs of Henry Greenly, as 1, 2 and 3 but with an additional inside cylinder. July 1937 inside cyl. motion failed whilst in service, towed back to New Romney where wrecked motion removed and cyl. blanked off. 1938 received a blue livery and renamed BLUEBOTTLE, to run a new named train 'The Blue Train'. Used by army during WW2. 1947 rebuilt at Ashford Works, name reverted to HURRICANE. 1956 new boiler. 1972-73 rebuilt and redundant inside cyl. removed altogether. Mid 1970's rebuilt by Cushing Engineering, Rainham, Kent.

Built to designs of Henry Geenly, as 1; 2 and 3, but with a third inside cylinder. 1935-36 this cyl. disconnected and blanked off. used by army from time to time during WW2. 1946 rebuilt at Ashford Works, who supplied new larger tender later in year. 1958 new boiler. Mid 1970's rebuilt by Cushing Engineering, Rainham. Kent, redundant cyl. removed altogether.

Ordered 1926, built to designs of Henry Greenly as a mixed traffic version of his pacifics for the R.H.D.R. Withdrawn from service 1931 as unsuitable for available traffic. Used as a source of spares for other locos. until reduced to a boiler shell and set of frames. 1946-47 rebuilt to full working order by Clifford Edwards at Hove. 1961 new boiler fitted, 1970-72 extensive overhaul at New Romney.

Built to the designs of Henry Greenly, ordered by J.E.P.Howey 1926,  hauled R.H.D.R. inaugural train 16/07/1927. Withdrawn from service 1931,  1936 rebuilt to work ballast trains for the Romney Marsh Ballast Co. 1940 fitted with armour plating at the Southern Railway's works at Ashford. Used by the army on an armoured train for beach protection. 1946 rebuilt Ashford Works with new larger tender, continued on ballast trains until c 1948.  1958 new boiler by Gower.

Built to designes of Henry Greenly, ordered by J.E.P.Howey early 1926, 1947 rebuilt at New Romney, with new larger tender built at Ashford Works. 1957 rebuilt at New Romney by A.R.W.Crowhurst with new boiler by Gower. 1984 rebuilt by T.M.A.Engineering, Birmingham.

Ordered by Count Louis Zborowski, worked stopped when he was killed in a motor racing accident 10.1924. Order taken over by  J.E.P.Howey for hir R.H.& D.R. Major overhaul/rebuilds. 1946-7 at  S.R. works Ashford, Kent; 1960 ; 1982 at T.M.A.Engineering, Birmingham; 2008 Crowhurst Engineering, Hythe, Kent.

Built to designs of Henry Greenly, as a goods loco. for the heavy  quarry traffic on the R.&. E. R. The first design of a 2-6-2  for a British railway. 1927 Poultney articulated power unit added under tender, by Yorkshire Engine Co. works number 2229. Thus becoming a  2-8-2+0-8-0, not successful, removed 07/1931, the frames of this were retained until used in 1964 for the new RIVER MITE. In storage 1939-1952. 1983 new boiler, 2013 damaged in workshop fire, restored, first resteamed 30/10/2017.

New loco. built on the surviving frames of the original 1896 KATIE built at Duffield Bank #4. Construction started 1993. 2005 new boiler fitted. 30/01/2014 removed to Station Road Steam, Lincolnshire for completion.

Design work started 1877. New to builder's own Duffield Bank Railway. 1917 sold to R.& E.R. 05/09/1926 withdrawn from service, 1927 mostly cut up for scrap, frames saved and incorporated in a 'bitsa' ic loco I.C.L. No.2, not successful, scrapped 01/1930, again frames saved, and left lying around on the ground. Believed now placed in the museum.

Built using the Poultney tender chassis and motion removed in 1931 from RIVER ESK. Building commenced 07/1964. Delivered by road hauled by a steam road locomotive. Entered service 05/05/1967.New boiler 2002.

Ordered by Sunderland Corporation for their Ocean Park Railroad, Seaburn, Co.Durham, named BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE. 1963 after boiler failure rebuilt with diesel electric drive. 1971 sold to T.E.Tate, Haswell, Co.Durham, who commenced rebuild back to steam. 04/1980 sold to Lightwater Valley Railway, Ripon, who completed rebuild with new boiler, re-entered service 08/1985 without nameplates. with running number 6100. 23/03/ 1994 sold to private owner in Derbyshire. By 2005 dismantled for overhaul. 09/2014 advertised for sale, no further news.

Construction started 1912 at his home, using B-L.castings and H.Greenly drawings. Building ceased 1914, re-commenced 1930, completed 1933. New to builder's private line at Hardwick Manor, near Tewksbury. 1948 sold to Sutton Min. Rly. Sutton Coldfield, named SUTTON BELLE. Line closed 1962, stored at Hunt Bros.(Oldbury) Ltd. until 2002 whe sold to Cleethorpes Coast L.R. with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Arrived Cleethorpes 10/01/2002.

New to Fairbourne Min. Rly. named PRINCE EDWARD OF WALES, 1923 sold to Llewelyn's Min. Rly. Southport, renamed SIR ALBERT STEPHENSON, later rename KING GEORGE V,  15/09/1938 damaged in loco. shed fire, 1939 rebuilt, name became just KING GEORGE.

07/05/1969 sold by auction to A.B.Mason, Burnham Market, 1970 sold to new Whorlton Lido Rly. For sale 1985-86.  23/03/1994 sold to a private owner.

New to Sand Hutton Railway, Yorkshire, named SYNOLDA , 1924 in store at Cricklewood, sold to Southend Min.Rly. 1938 sold to Raymond Dunn, County Durham. 1942 sold to Belle View Min. Rly. Manchester, renamed PRINCE CHARLES. 1978 donated to R.& E.R. 1979-1980 rebuilt by apprentices at British Nuclear Fuels, Windscale. Renamed SYNOLDA. 

Built to design of Henry Greenly, new to White City Imperial International Exhibition, White City, West London, named RED DRAGON.

1911 removed to Rhyl Miniature Railway, named PRINCE EDWARD OF WALES. 1920 to Dreamland Park Miniature Railway, Margate.1968 sold to Robin Butterell. Tender, driving wheels, and other parts used by Roger Marsh for restoration of GEORGE THE FIFTH. 1984-1991 remaining parts used by Gordon Walker to build a new RED DRAGON,  completed by Austin Moss.
